About Amb. Stuart Jones
President, International and Government Affairs, Bechtel Corporation
Amb. Stuart Jones assumed his position as Bechtel’s President for Regions and Corporate Affairs in January 2019. In his new role, he oversees Bechtel’s regional and government affairs and communications.
Stu joined Bechtel in January 2018 as Regional President for Europe and the Middle East, after three decades as a career U.S. Foreign Service Officer.
In September 2017, he stepped down as Acting Assistant Secretary/Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau in for Near East Asian Affairs at the Department of State, a position he held through the 2016 Presidential transition. Prior to his return to Washington, he served as the US Ambassador to Iraq, from 2014 – 16 and US Ambassador to Jordan, from 2011 – 14.
Stu has also served Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, 2008 -10, with responsibility for the Balkans and the European Union; Deputy Chief of Mission in the US Embassy in Iraq, 2010 – 11; and Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Cairo, 2005 – 08.
Other foreign tours include Turkey, Colombia and El Salvador.
Hailing from Philadelphia, Stu is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School and Duke University; he is a member of the American Academy of Diplomacy and the Council on Foreign Relations.
He is married to Barbara L. Jones, a career civil servant with the Department of State.
